STUDY IN ROMANS

THE PROBLEM OF SIN

ROMANS 6:1-7

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

  • Shall we continue in sin? v.1 1 Peter 2:16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
  • We who are dead to sin should no longer live in it v.2 Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
  • Believers have been baptized into Jesus’s death v. 3 Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
  • We now should walk in newness of life. v.4 Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead
  • We share in His resurrection v.5 Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God
  • The old man has been crucified v.6 Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
  • We are freed from the power of sin. v.7 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
